Why Did Jesus Die? | The Meaning of Good Friday
In this Good Friday bonus episode, we explore the powerful meaning behind the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and why it’s the most pivotal moment in Christian history.
Looking at the Gospel of John, we highlight how ancient prophecies were fulfilled - even through the actions of Roman soldiers. From the dividing of garments to the spear in His side, every detail reveals a divine plan. We also unpack the symbolism of the blood and water and what it means for salvation.
Jesus' final words - “It is finished” - weren’t the end, but the beginning of hope for all humanity.
Whether you're a believer or curious about the historical evidence for Jesus, this episode offers meaningful insight into why Good Friday matters.

Hey guys, here's some bonus content from the Saints that Serve podcast. I hope you enjoy it. Bonus hey guys, welcome to some bonus content for the Saints that Serve podcast. Some very special bonus content the most special bonus content, I would say I would actually say that this is why we do this.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, it actually is.
Speaker 1:We are talking about. So it is Good Friday and it is a very good Friday, and it is a very good Friday For those of you who do not know what Good Friday is. It is the remembrance celebration that Christians partake in as we remember the day that Christ Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, was crucified and died.
Speaker 2:He died on a Friday, during the Passover and he did in fact die. It wasn't any kind of hoax, it wasn't any kind of oh, he was just in a coma, you know anything silly or goofy like. No excuses, no make-believe. He died.
Speaker 1:Yes, the Romans were better at documenting verified deaths than our modern-day morgues. So he was dead. He was killed by Romans Roman soldiers, sorry. And then he was put in a new tomb close to where he was crucified.
Speaker 2:And that rock was rolled and closed up and the tomb was sealed. That is what I was looking for. Yes, sealed.
Speaker 1:It was sealed and guarded. That's. Another thing is that it wasn't just sealed because there was anticipation that people would try to make it seem like his resurrection was a hoax, because he predicted his own resurrection.
Speaker 2:Mm-hmm. Oh, whoa, that's a little spoiler territory for our episode on Monday.
Speaker 1:That is a spoiler. We're getting ahead. We are doing this episode. We're doing this episode to remember the importance of Good Friday and then tune in Monday to get the finisher, the full story, Full story Of Easter. Yeah, so I'm going to read I have opened up to the gospel of John, chapter 19, and we're going to be starting in verse 16. In verse 16.
Speaker 1:So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, Galgatha, which in Aramaic is Galgatha. There they crucified him and with him two others, one on either side and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate Do not write the king of the Jews, but rather this man said I am king of the Jews. Pilate answered what I have written I have written.
Speaker 1:When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier, also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they said to one another Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, so to see whose it shall be. This was to fulfill the scripture which says they divided my garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots. So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus, where his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene, when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother Woman, behold your son. Then he said to the disciple Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the scripture, I thirst. A jar full of sour wine stood there. So they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said it is finished. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit, Since it was the day of preparation and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath. For that Sabbath was a high day.
Speaker 1:The Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness. His testimony is true and he knows that he is telling the truth that you also may believe. For these things took place, that the scripture might be fulfilled. Not one of his bones will be broken. And again another scripture says they will look on him whom they have pierced. So yeah, that's the death of Christ according to the Gospel of John.
Speaker 1:A little bit of a somber reading there, yeah, and you know it's. It's cool to to read it and see that john is emphasizing like hey, like the reason I'm telling you that they divided his garments and then they cast lots for it. Like that's a fulfillment, like these are roman soldiers who have no care to fulfill any kind of Jewish prophecy for the Jews, who they consider subordinates. But here they are fulfilling an Old Testament prophecy. And then later on, you know, a soldier's just trying to verify that he is no longer alive and so he spears him in the side and it fulfills an Old Testament prophecy of not a bone will be broken, and when he spears him outpours blood and water.
Speaker 1:And those are significant because for ritual cleanliness and spiritual cleanliness according to Levitical law, for ritual cleanliness or bodily cleanliness, like if you ever have unclean discharge or women during their menstrual cycle or someone with leprosy and they get over the leprosy or whatever, whenever those things happen, they have to go and do a ceremonial cleansing with water of their body, because it's an external thing that has to be cleansed before they can enter into communion with God. Whereas if they commit a more serious sin of the heart, meaning like they lie or they withhold something or they're in opposition, they covet their neighbor or whatever, it is One of the sins. That's not like you have to be killed for doing this, but you do have to make a sacrifice. The atonement is blood. Blood has to be poured out and that's where the animal sacrificial system came into play, and so Christ died on the cross and when they spear him, outpours blood and water, the two necessary atoning liquids to be atoned bodily and spiritually, and then later on we'll see that those are a testament. There are two of the three that testify to Christ and his finished work on the cross it's the blood, the water and the spirit. God's spirit was on Christ and so it's just like. Here he is. Jesus is dead, he's dying. There's no way he has control over these prophecies being fulfilled and there's no way that he could make it work out to where the imagery would just be so blatantly obvious to someone who's under Old Testament law. And yet here we are. So, yeah, big deal, Some would say the biggest deal.
Speaker 1:Yes, Hebrews makes the point. I can't remember the verse In our Monday episode. I'll have the verse, but it makes the point that Christ was the final and necessary sacrifice, Like there didn't need to be another one after him. He was the sacrifice that truly atoned for all sin, both past, present and future sin. And so you know, whenever the spirit comes upon somebody and the light that shines on their sin and they're made aware like, oh, I'm the bad guy, Like I need to be healed, Christ's crucifixion on the cross is the sacrifice that was made in order for us to be healed from our sin and to be delivered from that death that comes from sin. So, yeah, really cool stuff. Like I said, I'll have that verse in Hebrews. It talks about him being the sacrifice. There's not another necessary one, Like he's the only necessary sacrifice that atones for sin. So, yeah, if you don't believe in this and you think it's a bunch of fairy tale nonsense yeah, made up fairy tale nonsense. First off, you're wrong.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think that. And in a more loving and caring statement, reach out, and in a more loving and caring statement reach out.
Speaker 1:Yeah, let us know if you have questions or if you have disputes or corrections.
Speaker 2:I guess Because we're open to conversation.
Speaker 1:Yes, 100%, we're not going to be. We're not going to shut you down. We want to hear what you have to say. I will say that this is the most documented ancient event that we have today, like Christ's life and death and resurrection is the most written about thing in all of human history. So to say that it's just made up, you're going against a lot of evidence that says that it's not made up.
Speaker 1:All because your pride doesn't your worldview tells you that it can't be, and so, rather than trying to take an unbiased approach and look at it, I mean we're the same way as Christians. Like anything that's outside of Christ we tend to be biased of, we all have our biases right, and as Americans, we have a bias against other countries Only because we live free.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so everyone has biases because of the culture or the paradigm that they live in, but the truth of the gospel is that Christ died for your sin. You are forgiven. Receive that forgiveness so that you can live in the eternal life that God has for you. He created you to live as an eternal being in this perfect world that he's bringing about, and the onboarding is the acceptance of forgiveness through Christ.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:So just try to have an open mind and just look at the gospels I mean look at the gospel of John, read it all the way through and see what people have to say about people that are. If you're education, you're a big education person. There's a lot of educated people that have a lot to say about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Hey guys, try Christ. Well, I don't want to say it that way, that almost sounds like a—.
Speaker 2:Like you're questioning.
Speaker 1:Hey, just dip your feet in the water or whatever. Like no, I mean to be totally honest as a Christian. Like if you become a believer, you become counter-cultural and so there will be a lot of opposition in your life in general if you choose to follow Christ. So I mean, some places have it worse than we do in America. There are some countries in the world that if they find out you're a Christian you're going to be killed, but here it's like it'll say like oh, so you're dumb or you're ignorant or you're a bigot or you're a hypocrite because you believe in Jesus. So but yes, there is some sacrifice that comes with being a believer, and sacrifice is living as the world lives. But it's so much better, so much better. I've lived both lives and I can honestly say that living for Christ is way better than living for myself.
Speaker 2:So we're going to sell a t-shirt and it's going to sell on the front it's going to say try Christ. On the back it's going to say, actually don't just try Christ. And then your entire speech.
Speaker 1:After that, the entire speech. Oh yeah, man, but yeah, seriously, if you have any questions or concerns or arguments, reach out. We would love to hear from you and we will actually talk back.
Speaker 2:Yep. So thanks for tuning in to this very special beginning what I would say bonus episode to our Easter special. Yes, so tune in on Monday For the grand finale, for the grand finale of our Easter special, which, if we talked about these things Good Friday and whatnot we're going to go a lot deeper, a lot deeper. So I'm going to finish out with I think this applies to the end of this episode and, as Jesus said while he was hanging on the cross, it is finished.
Speaker 1:This has been bonus content, with the saints that serve podcast Tune in every Monday for a new episode.
